What is a blog or what does blog stand for are two questions that many internet users still often ask. Well, in short, a blog is basically an online journal whereby a blogger or a contributor to a blog, can digitally note their own thoughts, ideas, opinions and practically anything else that bloggers want people to read about.

Blogs are often called weblogs because after all they are a particular type of website, usually maintained and updated by an individual with regular entries of events, descriptions of situations, personal commentaries or other material such as graphic images or video. Entries are, more often than not, displayed in reverse-chronological order.

Blogs are fluid, interactive platforms for bloggers to get their message across to readers, as opposed to a more static website platform.

There are many resources available on the internet to provide you with blogging tips and information. For instance should you create your blog via a blogging platform such as blogger.com or buy your own domain and set up your blog via a platform such as WordPress. One important aspect of setting up your own blog is that it enables the blogger to create a bond with their readers and to be able to interact with them. It is a great way to make your own thoughts known to others, to pass on valuable information to interested readers, or to create a web presence for your business. The options are numerous.

To achieve this it is advisable for the blogger to include an “About Us” type page, where the blog owner can outline who they are and to disclose the purpose of the blog to their readers.

It goes without saying therefore that, in the main, the blogger needs to know the subject well enough to write regular blog posts. I say “in the main” because the flexibility of a blog will allow the blogger to write a post inviting their readers to comment on a subject that is not so well known by the blogger.

This approach will further enhance the bloggers bond with the readers and will provide more, fresh unique content to their blog.

As mentioned above, blog posts need to be made on a regular basis, but not too regular if the quality of the blog posts are of a poor quality. For instance it is better to post just one really informative, quality blog post every 2 or 3 days rather than several flimsy posts on a daily basis. In short it is the quality of the post rather than the quantity. Posting poor quality posts too often will drive your readers away.

Very often forgotten by bloggers is the need to include tags in their blog posts. Tags let you target your posts into different categories, which can then be searched by readers. For each of your posts you should be looking to have two or three tags. Make use of tags correctly. For example, ensure you use the same words for similar posts but don’t give posts too many tags, as this tends to clog up categories.

Don’t have too many widgets and/or images on your blog to the extent that it slows down the loading of your blog. Readers will exit very quickly if the blog takes too long to load.

Always remember as well that blogs and blog posting should be enjoyable. It is not like writing articles for article directories. A blog post should be written more like your own experiences rather than a regurgitation of a load of researched facts. For instance, one of my passions is football. If I was posting a blog post on a football match then I would write it based on my own experiences of attending a football match rather than spout a load of facts about what a football match is – rules, the time a match lasts for etc.

The flexibility of a blog enables the blogger to get their message across and to take on board any responses or feedback from their readers. It doesn’t take that long to set up a blog – again there are many tips and guidelines available on the internet.

On a more administrative level, if you do set up your own blog, don’t forget to include a “Contact Us” and a “Privacy Policy” page as a bare minimum.

Try blogging, you will find it to be both enjoyable and rewarding.

How to Configure Your Systems to Send Sage Email Directly From a Microsoft Exchange Server

How to configure an Exchange server to allow you to send emails directly out of Sage 50 Accounts.

CAUTION:

You need to know that what you are doing is going to allow your Exchange server to send emails that are not authenticated. If you work for an IT support company then you will no doubt understand this risk but if you are not a seasoned professional in IT support or server support then you should consider obtaining the support of someone who is. This is a large security risk if you don’t do this properly. If you open up your Exchange server to let anyone to do this then you are likely to become victim of spam abuse.

Part 1 – Configure the Exchange server

We are going to configure the Exchange server to allow anonymous outbound email messages but we’re going to do it for just a handful of IP addresses. This greatly reduces the risk of abuse.

The first step is to create a new custom receive connector in Microsoft Exchange Management Console. To do this, launch the Exchange Management Console and expand ‘Microsoft Exchange’> ‘Server Configuration’> ‘Hub Transport. Here, click the ‘New Receive Connector’ function which you will find a link for on the right hand side of the window. Enter a suitable label for this connector in the ‘Name’ field. You might like to call it ‘Sage Accounts’. Within the ‘Select the intended use…’ area, choose ‘Custom’.

Click ‘Next’ and then ‘Next’ again to get to the “Remote Network Settings” page.

On the Remote Network Settings page edit the IP address list to say only the addresses that you want to permit. e.g. If Sage 50 Accounts is configured on a terminal server then you should only have the terminal server’s IP address entered here. If Sage 50 Accounts is run locally on an accounts PC then you’ll need to make the IP address of this PC static and specify it in this list.

Finish the setup of this new connector and then edit to view the properties of it. Go into the ‘Permission Groups’ tab and ensure that only ‘Exchange Servers’ is ticked. Then, go into the ‘Authentication’ tab and make sure that only the top entry (Transport Layer Security) and the bottom entry (Externally Secured) are ticked. Click OK and then restart the ‘Microsoft Exchange Transport’ service from within Control Panel> Administrator Tools> Services.

Now you should find that you can configure Microsoft Outlook to use the Exchange server’s LAN IP address as the outbound mail server without having to specify any kind of authentication. You can try this using Outlook or Outlook Express on the specific workstation or Terminal Server (eg the PC or Terminal Server that has Sage 50 Accounts installed in it).

Part 2 – Configure the Sage PC/Server

We are now going to configure Sage to send emails using the new Exchange Server configuration we created in step 1.

In Sage Report Designer, click Tools> Options> Email Setup. Configure the ‘Default Provider’ to SMTP and click the SMTP line in the ‘Available Providers’ box. Select ‘Configure’ and type the LAN IP address of the Exchange server in the ‘Server Name’ box. Leave the port number set to port 25 and leave SSL deselected.

Enter the email address you wish the emails to be sent from (eg “accounts@yourdomain.com” ) and type the display name for the email header (eg Your Company Name – Accounts). It’s not important to put anything in particular in the login details settings so this can be set to anything. Click OK.

Next you need to make sure that each layout you want to send as an email is setup to utilize SMTP.

First, edit a document in Sage Report Designer. Click ‘View’ on the toolbar and click ‘Properties’ to show the properties toolbar on the right hand side of the screen. Below the ‘Email Options’ area, click the ‘(Email Options)’ box and a button labelled ‘…’ will be shown. Click this button to launch the Email Configuration Window.

Make sure that the top setting (‘Provider’) is set to SMTP and that the option at the bottom of the page is set to ‘Send emails automatically’. Click OK at the bottom of the page.

The configuration of your system is now complete – You should now be able to email from that layout in Sage 50 Accounts.

This is a great multimedia company with very nice animations. The preloader is great to watch and when it’s finished the fun really begins. The main figure on the page waits when you press a button but it’s so much fun to wait a second and hit the figure with your mouse a few times. If you’re ready (after a few minutes hitting), press a button and watch all the different animations. Because of the nice animations I had to click all the links one by one. A very nice flash website which deserves a number 5 place.

4: 2Advanced Studios

Who doesn’t know this website. I guess this is the most discussed website ever. Maybe most people think this is number 1 ever but I think differently because they didn’t update the site graphics for a long time. I think they need a new update with a complete new style and layout. Still, the idea and graphics are fabulous. Also the scripting behind it is advanced and nicely done. It loads very fast for a huge site like this one. Love this one, definitely a number 4 position in my top 5 best flash websites ever.

3: IamStudios

Yeah a dutch company in the list. Welcome to iamstudios.nl, a really original concept and layout. When you enter the website, you see a fun 3d animation of a dog with a speakerhead. After you clicked on the button that you use to enter the flash website, the dog starts animating (very smooth). When the site is loaded, each button gives you a wonderful animation. I really love the 3d work here and the beautiful “white” look. I’m really proud this site comes from the Netherlands. The overall look is very impressive so a number 3 for this doggy.

2: DerBauer Audio Visual Media

Welcome to DerBauer, a website from Marcus Bussejahn. This classic website is one of the best websites I’ve ever seen, actually THE BEST but unfortunately I don’t really like the latest layout. Especially the menu doesn’t look great in my opinion. 5 years ago derbauer was unique and original. Nowadays there are much better ones but because of it’s history and quality it’s for sure a number 2 position. BTW, when you opened the site, there is an Easter egg when you do nothing for a few minutes, very nice! Are you afraid?

1: MGM Grand Entertainment

I know….this site is not famous and perhaps you don’t like it but I think this site is so original that I had to put it on number one! Enter the world of MGM Grand. Press the “Enter Maximum Vegas” button and start the tour. This is not really a flash animation site but a flash video site. With Adobe Flash 8 and later, it’s easy to integrate video in your website. MGM did it in a special way. They shot one video animation and loops it. You can stop the video with the navigation on the lower right corner. When you do that, the video fast forward to the certain location and stops the video there. Then the flash animation comes into place and you can read the information. I never saw this concept before. This is my best site ever, a really 2008 website made with the latest technology available for websites these days.
